Moses From page B2 (verse 21) - that answers “How can we know ...” - when a prophet is found to be false. Moses says their threats on behalf of the Lord are not to be feared. “The prophet has uttered it presumptuously. Do not stand in dread of him” (verse 22). Summarily, a prophet is one who claims the truth, warns, exhorts and encourages. This is an apt description that applies to Moses as the greatest prophet and the only one to speak to God face to face. (The UMI Annual Commentary 2020-2021, The Jewish Study Bible, The MacArthur Study Bible and The Tony Evans Study Bible). For Your Consider ation: Why is it important that a prophet be of divine appointment? How do you test a prophet’s words? Application: We have from God’s Word a standard for any prophet who claims to speak in His name. To uphold that standard, we ourselves must know God’s Word. There are certainly false prophets even today, but if God’s Word is carved in our hearts, we will be able to resist Satan’s wiles and know true prophecy and instruction. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways” (Psalm 119:11,15).
